Hello all, Looks like the timing for the Barndance Waterproject Celebration is perfect. We got the results (attached to this and the following email). Water quality is good (they haven't tested the microbials) and using my judgment, we will be able to go ahead with a hand pump. I will conference with Mark next week to confirm, and perhaps Lara, you could check once again with Erin. Hand pumps have a capacity of about 1100 L/sec, according to the pump test the well produces water up to 2000L/sec. Installing a handpump right now makes financially more sense. The community can start collecting money, demonstrate sustainability etc. after which a more suffisticated system could be installed if it makes sense with the water quantities available. Dominik

Find down an detailed email with water pumping water test as I promised to do it. I am at the water project site, many women, children and babies carried by their mothers are in here to either witnesses the water pumping water test or collecting the water.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT – WATER PUMPING TEST REPORTS.

On 21^st October, at 10: am arrived at Cheku water project site by hired motor cycle. Geologist from Hydro tech and driller was setting the pump and electrical water tape just ready for the water pumping test.

At 10:45a.m the water pipes carried by Cheku local community through instruction from water technician taken into the well, the exercise performed accordingly water technician and a driller started on the generator. The problem happened with generator, by this day from the starting hours till late evening the problem persisting, final the water pumping test didn’t happen.

My self, I helped water technician and borrow a same kind of generator in the neighbor village at Kelema, most of the people had generator but all seemed too small to operate the water pump.

On 22^nd October’0 9. At 08: 38a.m back to the project site, an electricity technician from Kelema village worked hardly to fix the problem with generator, at 11:49a.m the problem with generator fixed by electricity technician. The plug was not worked, so we borrowed another plug to produce power with generator.

The pump carried again by local community and taken into the well. The generator switched on and worked properly.

Another problem occurred with water pump!! The water pump failed to pumping water out from the well, power switched on at several times, final water technician detected the water pump didn’t work, the problem was from the motor of the water pump.

We had discussion, and water technician called their office in Dar, promised to sent new water pump from by next day on 23rd Octber’09. In case the new water pump will sent by the promise day we agree to work the next day on 24^th Octber’09.

My comments, the generator seemed to be old and not the good one, as well the water pump was the same, look tired as it worked either they didn’t try all the equipments before brought at the water project site. Electronic water tape worked well and the tool is a new one and better, most of the time was giving sound results when dropped into the well and touched water level.

The breaking information- The new water pump arrival yesterday, right now I am at the project site, the pump worked and water pumped out just 13 second per 22 liters water bucket. The generator failed again to work, so the exercise stopped, we are waiting for the electrician to fix the problem.

Lara, I know that you understand very well our environment and Africa life, we are facing electricity power location, so we are given electricity mid of the night and early in the morning no power, so my work turned to be very very hard. I am in final preparation for technical report I will send it soon.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT REPORT ON 30 SEP’09.

The second phase of the water project complied in primary stage, the last point was to do back fill, to put fill sand down into the well from the point of 79 meters deep to 110 meters, and it’s done.

The bottom of the well capping , the cap will be opened the time pump testing department from the Hydro Tech will arrival at water project site.

Pump testing will be done; the exercise will give us the result quantity of the water, how much water yield per hour, this result will tell us the size of the water engine needed to be bought.

Water will be taken to the Government water laboratory, in this stage will be telling by results if water will be safe for human being useful or not.

Physical the water test was sweet, myself I tested, drilling team and many local community was around tested it too. In other few areas result of water have been found to much salts, in this results community not happy since it’s very hard to drinks water having salts. In our water project were very lucky.

I talked to Mr. Bago today on 30thSep’09, he is in Tanga Region where his Mother admitted in the Regional hospital, he told me that by Saturday he will be in Dodoma, so he asked me to contact him since we hope by next week the pump testing department from Hydro Tech probably they will be there, in case I will let him know and then he need to come at the water project site.

My comments, now the community waiting for a very sensitive stage which is pump testing, and to get a water safeties, final stage of pump and engine installation and enjoying the fruits of Queen Victoria Water Project in Canada. WATER.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT REPORT ON 8 th SEP’ TO 12th SEP’2009.

On 3rd Sep’09 late evening the new mud pump arrived from Dar-es-Salaam. By that day Mr.Beda asked me to be at a water project site.

On 4 th Sep’09 the new mud pump setting and tried if can work good, late in the evening a new mud pump shown positive results.

I traveled from Dar-es-Salaam and arrived late in the evening at 18:20hrs.

On 5th Sep’09 at 08:30am the drilling started, the drilling exercise was so much successful, there no any problem with the new mud pump, from the previous 63 meters, the drilling went deep down to 72 meters. In this stage the sand formation were very good and shown high percentages of water availability.

On 6th Sep’09 at 08:37am the drilling started, today again the drilling performed very good, the villagers attended to the project site was very happy and everyone was so much exited due to the drilling action, from 72 meters, today we reached 96 meters deep. The only problem was fuel (gas) finished for operating drilling tools. If fuel didn’t run out the drilling had gone deep more down.

On 7th Sep’09 the drilling didn’t happen, there was no fuel (gas)

On 8th Sep’09 at 08:29 the drilling started, from 96 meters to 110, the drilling exercise performed well, Mr. Beda I and Joseph we had very hardly discussion, the time drilling reached 110 meters deep, due to the results shown, they explained to me and logical the PVC installation needed to be applied. (Remember at this point Mr. Baga a water technician was needed urgent) From the previous time I tried to call him and floated my SMS, the time SMS delivered we talked and told me was not easy him to be with us at project site. He was working in Mbeya Region-the Southern Highlanders part of Tanzania. Surely he wished to be there for the work but was not possible for him to come. Final I, Mr. Beda and Joseph we made a decision for PVC installation for rescue WELL life. Even the time I talked to Mr. Bago he advised me to agree the situation.

On 9th Sep’09 at 08:20am the PVC installation work began, from bottom of the WELL and PVC penetrated into the well to 72 meters. The problem happened due to sand formation the PVC didn’t go more deep from the point. Then they pulled all them out. The dark made us to stop working.

On 10th Sep’09 08:30 since the PVC setting failed the previous day, today the exercise were to clean the WELL from the walls of the Well corrupted into the WELL, this were the factors of PVC stuck. Cleaning action was good. The PVC installed and reached 78 meters deep. Again didn’t go deep more down, we had a discussion, Mr. Beda, Joseph and me, Mr. Joseph is Hydrologist by profession from Hydro Tech, final we agree gravel applied, more deep of 78 meters found clay formation normally clay have no characteristically of water availability. The gravel exercise performed well and a bit of well development really happened.

On 11th Sep’09 at 08:32am Well development (water cleaning) the Cheku villagers who attended at the water project site was very happy on this day by their own eyes witnessed the water from this well. The time gravel applied dropped itself into the WELL; I asked and told that was normal and better because gravel arranged itself down the WELL. The gravel finished at site and fuel too. This day Cheku community will never be forgotten to them, since now it’s very dry in the area. In this dry season women and young children walk so far distance to collect water, must wake up mid of the night to find water and sometimes they don’t find water. The community attended to the project site was no believe the time seen water most of the brought their cattle’s to drink and collected water for washing at home.

12th Sep’09 from 08:30 Well development performed, slowly water start to look clean and the more exercise was moving on and water look so clean. We have very good luck with water since everyone tested it find no salt, I mean good luck for finding sweets water.

On 13th Seep’09 and 14th Sep’09 No work done at the project site, I can state that the Water drilling hade finished even though not at all in this Phase, tomorrow they will do back fill for the WELL.

The drilling team expecting to leave in a few days, the pump testing department will come to the site for the pump testing. The information I given by Mr. Joseph the time we had discussion for the pump testing.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT DAILY REPORT, ON 4 AUGAST 2009.

The drilling started at 08:30a.m, everything was moving very fast soon the drilling work reached 63 meters deep, the 3 meters was not yet cleaned by then. Exactly 61 meters was cleaned.

At 11:00a.m once again break down happened, this time corn Bering of the Mud pump, so the drilling stopped.

On 5 July’09 a driller- Mr. Beda traveled to Dodoma especial for repair the corn bearing.

I called him the next day, on 6 July’09 he told me that, he succeeded to repair the problem, and he was looking for the spear of corn bearing, soon he will find it, he might take a late bus back to Kondoa.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT DAILY REPORT, ON 3 AUGAST 2009.

This day the drilling started very late in the evening, at 16:38hrs, this because of the driller arrived at afternoon from Kondoa town where he had been fixing the piston shaft.

He took them several hours to replace the tool to the mad pump and then drilling started by the time mentioned above.

Only 1 meter drilled, now our WELL is 57 meters down. Technical the well has not any problem for the moment. The only problem for drilling is moving very slow, especial the happen down of the break down, in case no more break down the work will move very fast, and the work get finish soon.

Since the mad pump has no any problem, I hope the drilling will start early tomorrow on 4thJuly 2009.

I talked to a driller the time we had been at site,he told me that, no doubt that the water will be found due to the symptoms by the drilling.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT DAILY REPORT, ON 2 AUGAST 2009.

The drilling started at 08:48a.m, the drilling performance was very good, from the previous 50 meters; they drilled more 6 meters deep. At 14:30hrs, they had break down to piston shaft, a driller took it to Kondoa town where it will be fixed.

The drilling was moving very fast, in case was no this break down they should drill more deep down by the evening.

The Cheku community brought water; at the site the car hired by the Hydro tech also collected water. The way drilling going deep down, it seem the more water stream was found this because, mad pump was performed easy, the water poured into the WELL was not needed much any more, and clay rubbish came out easily of the well.

We hoping the drilling to continue tomorrow-0n 3 Augast’09 will depend on the time of fixing the spear to the mad pump.

I questioned a driller, how does he think the drilling will go deep to 120 meters, he answered me that they wont go deep down to 120 meters, the symptoms showing before reaching 100 meters big water stream can be reached.

About water testing, at the site they have got AC METER this only can check either the water having salt or no salt.

After water availability the hydro tech pump testing department will come to the site, they will check for the water quantity by that time water will be taken to the Dodoma Region water laboratory, we will have the results of the water quality.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT DAILY REPORT, ON 31 ST JULY 2009.

The Village Executive Officer called a village meeting, the village meeting should be held on 26thJuly 2009, I asked the Cheku village Officer to move forward the meeting due to my absent by that date. The village meeting forwarded to on 28 July 2009 by this day I attended but the village meeting didn’t happen due to a woman in the village passed away big numbers of villagers went for the funeral. The village meeting named to be on 31 July 2009.

On 31 July 2009 the village meeting held the main TOPIC was WATER PROJECT- WHY THE DRILLING TAKES MONTHS? INSTEAD OF VERY FEW DAYS?

Individual’s villagers contributed their ideas, talked much about the break down of the Rigs and drilling tools, the drilling company not better, the company were not prepared for the drilling, gods didn’t apses. Other talked about the villagers who are from the water source are not happy.

Mr. Beda, a driller from hydro tech company explained about his company, that is a better company drilled so many wells in various part of Tanzania, the break down it normal situation sometime happen, and promised by the mad pump drilling method very few days the well drilling will complete.

The village elders promised to slaughter a he and she lamb to apses the gods.

As a project manager, I asked the community living far distance from the water source should not be unhappy if is it true are angry with that matter. I reminded them and explain the water project going phase to phase, after the water available the engine will be installed, the water reservoirs will be building and water will be supplied to the sub-village where they can walk a very short distance to collect water.

Since the mad pump method drilling need water to be poured into the well, by this day the drilling didn’t performed due to lucky of water. I mobilized the community to bring water to the site even though going to be very hard work because will need to walk very far to collect water, now it’s dry everywhere so finding water it’s real very hard work. Almost all at the meeting was very happy and promised to bring water to the site in order the drilling to continue. Final the village chairman closed the meeting; I witnessed community’s faces happy after the meeting.

No doubt the drilling will performed tomorrow on 1 August 2009, since communities going to participate hardly collecting the water to the project site.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT REPORTS

On 14^th July’09 the hemmer bit arrived from Dar-es-Salaam, late in the evening.

On 15^th July’09 the hemmer bit sub member didn’t fit to the drilling pipes, so Mr. Beda took it to Kondoa town for repair in order to fit with the drilling pipes. He came back by the day evening.

On 16^th July’09 using hemmer method the drilling continue, real this day the work didn’t merit due to walls of the well keeping falling into the well, very few clay brought out the big quantity remaining into the well. I asked a driller slow of the work he explained to me problems was wall of the well behind of the fitted cases collapsed since being very soft meanwhile mixing with water, so far he told me that the better method to be used is MAD PUMP. He phoned in Dar-es-Salaam office to bring the mad pump.

On 17^th and 18thJuly’09 no drilling since the mad pump didn’t arrived yet.

On 18^th July’09 I left at project site, I traveled to Arusha to meet my clients. My intention was to be back by the next day soon after complete the safari arrangements.

On 18^th July’09 the MAD PUMP arrived by evening. On 19thJuly’09 again the mad pump sub connection member didn’t fit with drilling pipes. Again the day went for fixing the problems, at site the drilling team worked by fixing the cements to the holes beside the drilling point, there the big hole beside the drilling point prepared for stored of the water, the mad pump method need water and special clay to be fixed to an early water streams.

On 20^th July’09, only 2 meters drilling by using mad pump method. The exercise was not so good.

0n 21thJuly and 22nd July’09 by using mad pump method drilling done from 42 meters to 50 meters.

On 23rdJuly’09 break down happened, a tool knows as copper ring at French shaft connection to the hydraulic pump. The drilling exercise stopped.

On 24^th July’09 Mr. Beda a driller traveled to Dodoma especial for fixing a problem with a drilling tool, in Dodoma industrial didn’t be able to fix the problem. Then he traveled to Dar-es- Salaam. I called him and gave me explanation that the tool will be take couple od days to be fixed.

On 27^th July’ 09 again I called Mr. Beda and confirmed to me that tomorrow on 28^thJuly’09 he will be given the tool and next day, on 29thJuly’09 he will travel back to the water project. He told me that no doubt on 29^th July’09 the drilling going to start again.

Today on 27^th July’09 I overnight in small town know as Babati, tomorrow on 28^thJuly’09 I will proceed to Kondoa town then by motor bike to Cheku village for the attending a village meeting concerning with water project. Cheku village Executive called this meeting which will be held at 02:30p.m.

CHEKU WATER PROJECT DAILY REPORT ON 13 JULY 2009.

From morning at 09:00a.m the drilling started by cleaning the WELL, the exercise was so hard due to the well being stopped for many days, walls of the well falling into the well so caused the work to be more hard.

By using drug bit the well cleaned deep to 39 meters, zone of 20 meters to 36 meters seems was been falling down. Walls of the well protected with cases down to 39 meters.

Since the exercise being harder, the hemmer bit was to be implemented, there was so hard due to the clay falling into the well, real cleaning the well was very hard, Final the exercise went in a proper way.

The Rig has no problems, driller as well worked very hard on this day.

My comments the work was excellent, and the local community was so much exited with work too.

Day 42 (May 6th, 2009)

Hello.

No doubt that everyone is fine, I am very fine too.

The drilling- today on 05thMay’09. As I reported early that Mr. Beda a senior driller from Mr. Wilson’s company, he came to Kondoa for the picking money for buying fuel, he picked the money around at 11:45a.m, my friends in Kondoa helped him to buy the fuel and finding the pickup car for the carrying the fuel to the project site. By 02:52p.m we arrived at the project site, we didn’t start the drilling by then this due to bit rain at site which cause everybody escapade from the site. At 11:03p.m we started the drilling until 06:40p.m. The drilling method is Air hammer and we drill from the previous meters of 26 meters deep to 34.57 meters by 6 and half meters diameters.

Hoping to continue the drilling tomorrow, even though the WELL its look as if had problems of the falling walls WELL into the WELL. This will be known tomorrow.

Day 41 (May 5th, 2009)

Hello.

I am very fine and hoping that everyone is fine too.

Today on 4thMay’09- I and Mr. Bago we depart Kondoa town at 09:36a.m, as we agreed yesterday with Mr. Beda- a driller, he phoned us at 09:18a.m just about the rig problem were solved, asked us to go to the project site for the drilling. We arrived at project site at 10:38a.m, by 10:45a.m the drilling started by widened the hole from the 3 meters by diameters of “12 and half, they should drill deep down to 26 meters as Mr.Bago advised, the drill goes deep only of 13 meters instead. Actual they didn’t success to drill by in large the WELL hole deep of 26meters due to lack of fuel (GAS).

Mr. Beda, a senior driller he should use a donkey cart as only means of transport for carrying the empty buckets to Kelema village where he supposed to wait for the public bus to kondoa. Real they doesn’t a car for the site operation, since he required to be in kondoa before the time hours for the Bank closed, I and Mr. Bago we decided to give him our rented car. He left with our driver living us at the project site.

The time arrived in Kondoa still the Bank was open, he didn’t be able to get the money which sent by Mr. Wilson, in Kondoa no BARCLYS BANK, so the money were in Dodoma by then, final Mr. Wilson promised him tomorrow on 4thMay’09 he will send him money to NMB Bank in Kondoa.This the way Mr. Beda informed me the time I called to know what is going there.

Mr. Beda will sleep in Kondoa town, in case will be true the money will sent an early as Mr. Wilson promised him, the money can be picked early, Mr. Beda can manage to buy the fuel early and go back to the project site for further drilling.

The Rig hasn’t problem, I don’t know tomorrow, by the time they was in large the hole everything was good. In case there was no luck of fuel they should drill more.

Tomorrow hoping the drilling will go on, Mr. Bago told me that the way rig will have no problem we have to expect the drilling of 40 to 50 meters deep.

Hoping that everyone is fine. I am very fine too.

Today on 3thMay’09 we left Kondoa at 07:00a.m, by 08:20a.m we arrived at the Cheku project site.

Refer my last email, official they drilled 26 meters deep and stopped there, they just waiting me and Mr. Bago to arrive at project site for further drilling. I and Mr. Bago, we started to question Mr. Beda who is a senior driller, Mr. Bago needed to know technician what cases type fitted? The diameter drilled? Type of rock found? Can he show us the sample collected?

Mr. Beda- a senior driller and his colleagues – Tanzanian and the 2 Indian technicians decided to start the drilling. Mr. Beda told us he didn’t hear nothing from Mr. Wilson nor Mr. Toni about not to start the drilling without our presences. Yesterday the time Cheku Village Executive Officer flashed me and called him back and informed me about the drilling, by that time Mr. Bago phoned Mr. Wilson and told him about the situation was going on at the project site, Mr. Wilson stopped the drilling which was going on there. The time drillers asked to stop were reached the distance of 26 meters. Mr. Beda- a driller told us there are miscommunications between them.

The drilling- logical they drill by diameter of “12 and half for three meters deep. “8 diameters from the 3 meters deep to 26 meters deep. This means the WELL can be protected just three meters only, kind of this logical make easily the WELL collapse due decomposed rock from 3 meters to 26 meters, this can happen the time of drilling more meters from 26 meters, hemmer cause high pressure which can lead the WELL collapse or the time water found can cause the WELL walls to collapse and fall into the WELL.

The advice- Mr. Bago advised must the hole should in largely by 12 and half diameters from the bottom to 26 meters deep. After enlarging by that diameters working or temporary casing shall be driven to 26 meters to prevent collapsing the WELL and falling in the WELL sedimentary from the WELL walls. Mr. Beda agreed the Mr. Bago’s advice. From the Bago’s advice will enable the well to be protected.

The 2 Indian technicians- True I found the 2 technician, true that as I reported to you early what I heard real they speak a bit English.

Day of today- On 3th May’09 , no drill performed due to the Rig problem, from the time we arrived water project site was no more drill. The exercise of fixing the rig was going on till mid afternoon. From that time the 2 Indian technicians stopped to work. Final they told me and Mr. Bago that “ YOU GO TOMORROW COME DRILLING” What we understood I and Mr. Bago we can go back and come back to the water project site tomorrow for the drilling. I and Mr. Bago tomorrow we will call there before depart Kondoa.

The Rig- It doesn’t look as the Rig’s problem going to be a very seriously issue like the previous time. The big problem the technician was calling and given instruction by a unknown person by Indian language, we didn’t know what they was talking about.

For the past 2 weeks Toni, the lead engineer, has been in India getting a part for the rig. During this time Moshi returned to Arusha and Mr. Bago to Dodoma.

Toni went to India and returned with 2 technicians from to help repair the rig. Currently they are in Cheku with the water team from Hydrotech working on the rig.

Moshi and Mr. Bago are waiting until the rig is fixed to return to Cheku. It has been a very frustrating process waiting, waiting, waiting. Below is an update email that Moshi sent:

Hello.

No doubt that everyone is fine there. I and my family we are fine too. I would like to pass you the information which I received from water project site.

Today on 21ththApril’09 at 09:30a.m local time, I talked to Cheku Village Executive Officer (VEO) I asked him if real Mr. Toni got down there with 2 Indians. His answers, yes and since the day before arrived by evening they was very busy repair the rig.

By this, on 12thApril’09 an early in the morning Mr. Toni left to Dar-es- Salaam while he left the 2 Indian technician still repairing the rig.

Again I called someone named Mr.Kimolo who is among the village water committee, since I needed to talk to one of the Indian technician. It didn’t work because the Indian speak a bit English, doesn’t either speak Swahili, also look very busy with a rig.

I asked Mr. Kimolo to connect me to any person from the drilling team, connected me to a young man named Francis. I asked Francis about the way moving on with Rig repairing and what has been found by the 2 Indians technician. What he told me not a big problem only the problem of previous-Main hydraulic pump. I asked again, the way he see or maybe heard from 2 Indian technicians is the work going to take two weeks? He answers- No. Maybe by Thursday or Friday this week the drilling will start. Only they were waiting for their colleagues who are on the way from Dar-es-Salaam to the water project site. The other staff from drilling team were expected by evening on 21thApril’09 with the new Main hydraulic pump. Francis told me further, the matter is the staffs arrive and the exercise fixing the Main hydraulic pump will not take more than 1 hour. I asked him more, if the drilling can start without Mr. Toni? Francis answered. Yes there is no need of him. There enough profession staffs who can operate the Rig during the water drilling.

I looking forward to talk to Francis again tomorrow since he talked nicely to me. The more information I will get from him, I will update to you.

Yet another delay.

Hello.

Myself, I am fine and hoping that everyone there is fine too.

Depart in Kondoa. I and Mr. Bago left Kondoa an early at 07:a.m since we agreed to leave early and arriving early at the water project site. We arrived at the water project site early for drilling start.

Water project site.

We found the problem still going as the day before we left. The Rig before had problem from the GEAR BOX TRANSMISSSION including Bering problem. Today on 2nd April’09, the Rig has another problem; I and Mr. Bago were told the problem is main hydraulic pumping system.

At 10:00a.m Mr. Wilson and Mr. Toni left to Dar-es-Salaam with spear has problem. They hope to fix a spear there or either to buy a new one. Mr. Wilson and Mr. Toni expecting come back within 3/ 4 days from the day they left. As a project Manager I asked Mr. Wilson to report the problem to Mr. Dominick with detailed an email even though I will send my report too.

My suggestion.

As a Project Manager I do suggest that: 1. I have experienced one problem from the Truck (Rig). An early was Clutch plate which caused such long delay of the truck arrived as the contract said. 2. The truck when arrived at site we expect drilling to happen next day, on that day was no drilling this due to the another problem as I reported to you, in reminding you a problem was a bearing operate a rig during the drilling. 3. Today on 2nd’March’09 at morning we expected the drilling going to perform, there was no drilling once again.

Kindly, I don’t hope if Mr. Wilson and Mr. Toni the day back from Dar and fix the problem if the drilling will start. Ok it might start!! If so everyone will be happy for the drilling start. I am so much worrying since we had problems from the same Rig caused much delay, this Rig we depend on to drill and make the dream of everyone comes true.

I advise, Mr. Dominick can ask Mr. Wilson to confirm we are not going to face more trouble from the same important tool, and once again any problem will happen, he have to send another Rig, not keeping fax problems occurred.

Cheku Water Project.

DAY 9 (April 1st, 2009)

Things are happening in African time. There is still a problem with the rig and it started to rain so the project area had to be drained.

NOTE: There is one rainy season, which occurs between December and April. The hottest months, June - October are the hottest months of the year with temperatures rising to over 35C at midday creating the desert like climate that creates the drought like conditions for the people of Cheku.

Real it has been raining a whole night until morning at 09:24a.m today on 1st April’2009.

I and Mr.Bago left Kondoa town to the drilling site at 09:00a.m, the Road was not real good for the car driven as normal speed due to the sleeper. We arrived at water project site at 10:45a.m.

Water project site.

Cheku local community working hardly to drain water from the rain around the site was hard for the drilling team to finish fixing the vehicle. Final water drained and given another direction to flow. It was great job done by local community.

Drilling/car technician went underneath of the Rig, from 11:30a.m to 06:00p.m.

There is Bering for gear transmission didn’t work. I and Mr.Bago witnesses only the car problem fixing and not drilling. Asked them why they didn’t fix it since yesterday. Told me that they should finish it the problem was rain.

My comments.

The drilling didn’t happen due to the Rig problem apart from rain, local community worked very hard to drain water to make sure the water drilling start. Also today we witnesses the arrival a competency driller, the way I and Mr. Bago observed there was no experts one can use the Rig, there was Mr.Wilson and 2 person but all didn’t know how to control and operate the Rig. A man arrived today he look is a one can operate a Rig.

I have been working very hard try send you pictures report, faceing problem with attaching files. Right now it's 01:37a.m, just I going to sleep.

Another update:

1. Moshi had a conference with the community to keep them up date about the water project and what to expect

2. The engineers continued to set up the rig
3. They had to check the rig because there was a problem with the gearbox.
4. They spent most of the day testing the equipment and fixing the gearbox.
5. Right now testing has been finished and drilling is expected to happen tomorrow

Hoping everyone is fine this moment. I am fine and everything still going fine. Only yesterday I had sick that happened due to the heavy-downpour occurred the time we have been at the water project site. Right now I am very fine.

Hydro Tech.

Mr. Wilson and the drilling team arrived yesterday-on 30th March’2009. Around at 02:28p.m. Kelema village along the Great North Road, from Kelema village to the water project site- Cheku village it’s just 6/7 km.

I and Mr. Bago we met the drilling team at Kelema village, since we have been contact the time they left in Dodoma town, we left Kondoa town to Kelema village in order to wait for them.

The Road to Cheku village after main Road, I mean the 6/7 km was not very good especial this time during the rain season. Took us several times to discuss and final we decided to check a road both of us, Mr. Wilson used a his Land Rover 4x4 ,I and Mr. by Suzuki Vitara 4x4, before the Rig going there. We didn’t find the Road good enough for the Rig to pass through. We asked Cheku local community to work for the Road especial at the very bad places; the exercises went as we planed and final the Rig didn’t stuck any where.

Water project site.

The Rig directed to the actual site for the drilling, Mr. Bago and I we proved the drilling point is the real written in the survey report, as well the Cheku village water committee and elders proved too.

Mr. Wilson and drilling team tested mechanical staff from the Rig. Since they had had problem from the Gear Box, all of us we agree that today, on 31thMarch’2009 they have do final services from the previous problem and make sure the time we start drilling we don’t going to face the same problem.

The Rig operated by transmission from the gear box, there noises when the Rig is on, technician confirmed to us is going to fix the problem before we start to drill.

Cheku villagers.

Women, Men, Children and elders was at site to witnesses what was happening, here everyone was so much exiting, happy and cheerful only for seeing the rig arrived, everyone talking and wish the water to be found. As well they was asking so many questions when people from Canada will arrival in the village, they didn’t if real things going to happen.

Transportation

The contract with car owner started on 23rd March’2009 ending on 31st March’2009. Both we agreed the vehicle will be used daily from 06:00a.m till at 08:00p.m. Car not hired to any person during our contract, if a case happens automatically the contract wont work and money refunded to a client (Mr.Moshi.) Simple case with a car such as flat tire will be dealt a big problem avoiding delay to the site must the rescue vehicle sent not more that 2 hour from the accident happen.

Friendly and honest car owner agreed to give us an extra 3 days. This start on 1st April’2009 ending 3rd April. This it out of the contract, his doing so since the matter is helping local community, himself doing at as volunteering.

KICHECO.

It took me not more 40min, expressing about the water project, reminding them how did it start, was not easy to collect the fund, the way Canadian contributed(donate) the whole project, talked special about Scholl children of the Queen Victoria Annex and their parents how hard working to make sure the water project happen. Explain to them the value of the water project, so far much care will be needed from themselves by any means to protect (maximum caring) the water project.

The time I was talking, I saw everyone eyes were agree what I was telling them.

Cheku village leaders talked very nice words to the community concerning the water project.

The drilling.

Tomorrow on 1st April’2009 we expect to start drilling as an early as possible. We are worrying from rain, right now I writing this email it’s raining here.

Finally in Chekku, the project area:

1. Drilling team arrived in Kalema (close to site) around 2PM

2. Moshi, Mr Bago and Mr. Wilson drove with their driver to Cheku to alert the villagers and ask for help clearing the roads.
3. 100 of the village men cleared the road so the drilling truck could pass through.
4. They arrived in Cheku village around 5PM
5. The engineers started setting up the rig

The truck was still in Morogoro and there was nothing the water committee could do but wait. Toni Swai, the mechanical engineer, spoke regularly with Moshi with updates that usually ended with: "Tomorrow we will be there and start the drilling".

Moshi was able to get the bluetooth on his computer working and he sent an email with an update to the water committee. Moshi's broken english has not been edited. Please remember that english is his third language (Irangi and Swahili are his first) so ignore the grammatical errors.

Real it was so much terrible and horrible for what happened, I mean on my side the way Hydro Tech escaped to give me the necessary information. At least now it’s better.

A man called Toni Swai, his mechanical for the truck and duty during the drilling talked to me through mobile phone. Down here is what he told me:-
(a) They received a spear part from Nairobi in Kenya for truck- Plate clutch.
(b) On the way to fix and tomorrow on 28th March’2009 will arrival and start the drilling. I told him that, first they should fix the truck not promising about the drilling. He agreed my advice.
(c) He told me that, he spoke to Mr. Dominik.
(d) Told him that I was very happy to hear from him, even though it would be better to hear direct from Mr. Wilson. Asked him that, he must call me when ever to give to me the necessary information. Toni confirmed that he will update me. Here took me several minutes to let him know the problem is not their only problem, all we are facing the problem occurred to them. We are team work. One way of solving a problem is communication rather than not to pick a mobile when someone call you, you have to pass the information for anything going on, either you in a very good position or good position.

He called me again late after 3 hours, told me they didn’t finish to fix the truck because it was raining much, so told me they will fix it for finalize tomorrow on 29th March’2009 starting at 5:00a.m.
I agree what he told me.

The drilling
The way I think, if real tomorrow might truck be fixed an early, they can manage to arrival even late night, the drilling may start the next day (hopeful)
All in all let us wait and see what will happen.

Cheku local community.

Everyone is so exiting, got information from the village from one person named KIMOLO, met him here in Kondoa town, he told me that, daily villagers assembly in the village waiting for us to arrival. Cheku village Executive Officer, n asking them to leave and wait until the day of our arrival, they don’t even to move from the place, shouting and shouting, no problem for us about waiting for our team. Big problem for them is water collecting, their big problem going to be solved. So why not for them to stay/standing and witnesses the drilling team arrival and the action of drilling.

Lara spoke to Moshi in the morning (his evening) and at night (his morning). Moshi was getting more and more frustrated because he could not get a hold of Wilson and it was making the Water Committee very nervous. Moshi and Lara texted back and forth.

LARA: Did the water team come yet?

LARA: I'm getting worried

MOSHI: The team has not yet arrived

LARA: Did you call again?

MOSHI: At 5Am I talked to him, he promised to call me until now not yet called.

MOSHI: Can you try to call him from there?

LARA: At leaset you talked earlier. I'll try calling.

MOSHI: Ok call him. I need to know if the drilling is happening today.

LARA: I just tried and no answer. I'll talk to Dominik and see if he can get through.

The project was supposed to have started today but the Hydro Tech truck broke down east of the project area in Morogoro. It was very stressful for Moshi because he could not get a hold of Wilson, the team leader. He sent a short email to Dominik later that day explaining what happened.
